GRAPPA

WHAT IS GRAPPA?

Grappa is a brandy made from pomace and possibly a portion of wine grapes. The grape must come from grapes harvested in Italy and must be distilled only in distilleries within Italy which must comply with very precise legal requirements.

WHO HAS FOUND THE GRAPP?

A people - the Italians! Grappa, as a brandy of pomace, was the result of studies of the Salernietano School, which established the rules for the concentration of alcohol by means of distillation around the millennium and prescribed the application in different human disease pictures, thereby helping the distillates to lasting success. Pester, which is a raw material which is rather poor in terms of alcohol, but which could be enjoyed everywhere, immediately became an interesting subject. The first written testimonies on the distillation of pomace were published in the 17th century They go back to the Jesuits, among them Francesco Terzi Lana of Brescia. However, there is no clear technological distinction between the alcoholic distillates until the beginning of the 19th century. Only then did the Italy of the grappa growers take their own way, which finally led to the production of high-quality beverages with their own unique characteristics.

THE HOME OF THE GRAPPA
Grappa is home to the northern regions of today's Italy and some of the southern regions of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire: South Tyrol, Trentino, Friuli, Veneto, Lombardy and Piedmont.
From the 17th / 18th century, From the monasteries onwards, distillery burned.
The distillate produced at that time, frequently referred to as the "poor people schnaps", had little in common with today's noble spirits.

The farmers of the late Middle Ages were poor and had to deliver the bulk of their harvest to the landlords.
Of the grapes they had no more than the pomace. They then distilled them to grappa.

In the time of Maria Theresia, the brandy was a state monopoly. Compared to the Tyrolese, however, the Empress showed a special kindness, and generously granted her the three hectoliters' rights, which are still valid today in Italy.
